Seperti diketahui, ada bug pada Gnome Network Manager di Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid). Bug ini menyebabkan setiap kali rebooting IP Address yang telah ditetap akan kembali lagi menjadi DHCP setup. Juga MAC Address menjadi kosong. Kasus ini juga terjadi pada laptop saya yang terinstalasi Ubuntu 8.10. Untuk mengetahui spesifikasi / informasi hardware pc / laptop di OS Ubuntu cukup simple. Yaitu dengan mengetik :

$sudo dmidecode

Saya baru saja mengunduh sebuah fiel help dari internet dan ternyata arsip tersebut memiliki format chm. (Microsoft Compiled HTML). Setelah proses download selesai, langsung saya mencoba membuka file tersebut di Ubuntu (8.10). Eh…Ternyata file tersebut tidak bisa dibuka karena belum ada program/aplikasi yang mendukung file format chm.
Searching dulu deh…dan dapat panduan yang cukup simple, yaitu dengan :
$ sudo apt-get gnochm (untuk Gnome user)
$ sudo apt-get kchhmviewer (untuk KDE user)

OK…Akhirnya file chm bisa dibuka di Linux dengan nyaman. Info ini juga bisa didapat disini

Kasus ini terjadi pada pc sudah terinstalasi debian ethc dan baru saja di upgrade. Booting berjalan seperti biasa sampai dengan login form. Tapi setelah login, ternyata gdm ga bisa loading (hang). Kenapa ini ??

Setelah googling sana sini dan akhirnya dapat masukan bahwa hal tersebut bisa terjadi karena gnome tidak memiliki session manager. Langsung saja saya coba instalasi :

$ sudo apt-get install gnome-session

Setelah proses instalasi selesai dan reboot. Akhirnya setelah login, gdm kembali normal

By default, root can not login to gnome in debian or ubuntu. In case, there’s another way to enable root login to gnome permanently. In a console just edit file :

$ sudo gedit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

In the [security] section of the file, change “AllowRoot=false“  to “AllowRoot=true“. Or you can add following line :

AllowRoot=true

Save it and you need to reboot or restart the gdm to find out.

Or you can do this by gnome, go to menu “System -> Administration -> Login Window” :

Go to “Security” tab and just check “Allow local system administrator login“.

Close dan reboot.
