There is another way to format hard drive to ntfs in ubuntu. You can install gparted in terminal. By default, there is no option for ntfs format. You should install ntfsprogs package for it.
sudo apt-get install gparted ntfsprogs
After package installed, you can format hard drive to ntfs. Just go to System -> Administration - Partition Editor. You can see ntfs option has enabled for to do it.

No NTFS options are available for any partition after following directions here. Looks like I’m going to have to shrink this partition and create another out of the unallocated space and try it on that one. No, I did NOT expect to be able to format this active partition as NTFS (as I’ve been able to do under old Windows OS to convert FAT32 to NTFS even though that partition was in use), but I’d HOPED a little.
